Negotiating Potentials and Limitations in Education in Transnational Migration Contexts: A Case Study

European Education, v48 n2 p120-136 2016
Education systems reproduce social inequality based on social class, gender, and minority ethnicity ascriptions, and are organized along national structures. This paper explores, how migration and international mobility shape an individuals scope of possibilities in the context of education. We analyze how societal and institutional possibilities as well as boundaries become visible in a biography and focus on an individual's capacity to act and to deal with challenges resulting from social conditions of inclusion and exclusion. The case study centers on a young woman with diverse migration and education experiences in Turkey and Germany. Her options arising from transnational spaces remain ambivalent and ridden with prerequisites, given societal power structures. We show that challenges in the creation and expansion of European educational spaces lie in addressing unequal education opportunities and countering the national centrism of education.
