Grant Writing
Mallon, Melissa
Public Services Quarterly, v13 n1 p15-20 2017
The Internet Resources column is designed to be a clearinghouse for free, online websites or apps; each column focuses on a theme relevant to current issues and trends in academic libraries and features resources selected to make the lives of public services librarians easier. While academic library budget woes may not be quite as drastic as they were five to ten years ago, robust library budgets are not by any means a given. Public services librarians often find themselves with a need to upgrade furniture or library equipment, add new (and expensive) collections or support faculty and staff professional development. When the money for these improvements cannot be found in the annual budget, librarians often look toward external funding. Grants are an excellent source of external funding, but can be overwhelming to locate and apply for. The reviews in this column cover a number of aspects of grant writing that will aid academic public services librarians in their search to secure funding. Grants.gov is an easy to use site that connects librarians with federal grants such as the National Leadership Grant for Libraries (NLGL), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)'s site provides guidance for librarians applying for grants such as the NLGL. Librarians will also find helpful tips for writing and submitting grant proposals on GrantSpace, as well as resources for creating a data management plans with DMPTool. No matter what stage of the grant process librarians may find themselves in (from searching to writing to implementing successful proposals), the resources featured in this column will certainly provide useful support.
