Changing Faces: Parenting, Culture, and Child Learning and Development
Iruka, Iheoma U.; Durden, Tonia; Kennel, Portia
ZERO TO THREE, v35 n4 p10-18 Mar 2015
This article identifies how parenting, culture, and education of ethnically diverse children influence their development and learning outcomes. As U.S. communities become more ethnically diverse, it is critical for educators, practitioners, researchers, and policy leaders to have an ideological and pedagogical understanding of how to maximize the opportunity for success and educational equity for all children. The authors present research and literature to make a case for the need to build professional skills and cultural competency in developing authentic partnerships with parents, implementing a family-centered approach, and engaging children in culturally responsive education.
