Action Research in Preservice Teachers' Arts-Integration Pedagogies for Social Justice Teaching and Learning
Felleman-Fattal, Laura Rachel
Childhood Education, v93 n1 p66-72 2017
Age-appropriate children's books can be an effective way to introduce and discuss issues of social justice with young students. These books can be the anchor for interdisciplinary lessons that integrate core content areas, such as language arts, science, and/or social studies with the visual and performing arts to enrich students' learning experiences. Examples of critical social justice issues include child labor, universal literacy, racism, water and air pollution, climate change, deforestation, refugees and immigration, war, hunger, and global health.
