Stepping up and Out: Strategies for Promoting Feminist Activism within Community Service-Learning
Rojas, Maythee
Feminist Teacher: A Journal of the Practices, Theories, and Scholarship of Feminist Teaching, v24 n1-2 p83-98 2014
This essay provides a critical analysis of the Community Service-Learning in Women's Issues (CSLWI) course and its impact on California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) students and the Long Beach community-based organizations (CBOs) that they worked with between 2008 and 2013. Specifically, it offers a pedagogical approach to creating feminist-specific projects for students to undertake at local organizations that serve young and adult women. The point of the coursework is that students learn to interact with the community and grow knowledgeable about organizing and the structure of community service work. A tacit hope is that they use their newfound insights into the community to develop a sense of responsibility and agency that can serve them in their personal and professional lives.
