Beyond the Single Story
McKenney, Yekaterina
Educational Leadership, v74 n4 p49-52 Dec 2016
Teachers of world literature have the opportunity to help students explore the more complex reality behind the stereotypes that they often see in the media. If we don't encourage students to challenge one-dimensional "single stories" that characterize an entire people--whether Muslims, Russians, Mexicans, African Americans, Chinese, Afghans, or others--they will be limited as 21st century citizens who need to understand other cultures. Using specific examples from curriculum units related to the Middle East and South America, English teacher Yekaterina McKenney describes how she uses multiple texts and thoughtful discussions to develop her students' deep understanding of other cultures.
