Developing a Nonsexist/Nongendered Language Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Benson, Erica J.; Kemp, Theresa D.; Pirlott, Angela; Coughlin, Casey; Forss, Quinn; Becherer, Laura
Feminist Teacher: A Journal of the Practices, Theories, and Scholarship of Feminist Teaching, v23 n3 p230-247 Spr 2013
This article describes a project initiated in 2011 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) to develop a research-based action plan to justify the need for, and consequently the creation and adoption of, gender-inclusive language policies that aligned with UWEC's equity, diversity, and inclusivity goals and mission. By 2013, six researchers (two undergraduates with programs in women's studies and English, a graduate student in English, and three faculty members from English, psychology, and women's studies) were working together to accomplish this goal. After introducing the project, the authors define what is meant by "sexist language," "gendered language," and "unnecessarily gendered language" and then review literature on the effects of sexist and unnecessarily gendered language. They go on to describe their strategy for drafting their gender-inclusive policy for UWEC which involved researching nongendered/nonsexist language policies at a variety of institutions, using an online survey to assess the campus climate with respect to gendered/sexist language, and crafting rhetorical strategies to frame their policy in a way that would be difficult to oppose. Finally, the drafting of the policy and policy approval and implementation are discussed.
