Musthafa, M. N. Mohamedunni Alias; Sajila, K. M.
Higher Education for the Future, v1 n2 p123-138 Jul 2014
One of the important goals of the universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) in India must be the improvement of the teaching-research (T&R) nexus, which relates to the ways in which research supports teaching and teaching supports research. "Teaching-research nexus" can be used to describe the multiple links that can be made between T&R to benefit student learning and outcomes. Improving the T&R nexus undoubtedly contributes towards quality teaching and learning. This article seeks to consider on reconsidering the T&R nexus in the Indian higher education (HE) system to bring about and ensure quality and excellence in all its academic endeavours. It focuses on different strategies for improving the T&R nexus and also designing a curriculum for transmitting research-based knowledge for effective teaching and learning in HEIs. The article also throws light on "Scholarship", the missing link between T&R. In addition to this, it suggests ways of motivating students in practising research in learning, as student involvement in research is an efficient way to educate throughout the education system--the great mass of students as well as the elite performers, for the inquiring society into which the academic community is rapidly moving. The article puts forth an agenda for constructive synergies between T&R to be pursued by individuals and institutions for advancing in this area.
