A Thematic Instruction Approach to Teaching Technology and Engineering
Moyer, Courtney D.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v76 n3 p8-12 Nov 2016
Thematic instruction offers flexible opportunities to engage students with real-world experiences in the technology and engineering community. Whether used in a broad unifying theme or specific project-based theme, research has proven that thematic instruction has the capacity to link cross-curricular subjects, facilitate active learning, and generate excitement. Implementation of thematic units can take years for full integration and is usually a work in progress. It may not be a party or a day at the park, but class exit feedback has indicated that students enjoy creating the substantive Tool Makers Square (TMS) project and list the TMS as one of the most positive experiences of the class. Through primary processes and secondary applications, the thematic approach helps link engineering concepts in fun and meaningful ways.
