Geography Teacher, v13 n4 p166-178 2016
This article describes the release of the second edition of "The National Atlas of Korea" (Choe 2015), published in December 2014 by the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) of South Korea (the Republic of Korea) in both Korean- and English-language versions. This second edition is a major update and improvement over its 2009 first edition. Given the importance of the map interpretation process and how it may assist in the understanding of spatial patterns and spatial phenomena, the authors (three researchers and four teachers) worked collaboratively to develop four lesson plans (two are AP Human Geography plans) based on data, materials, and resources from "The National Atlas of Korea." These lesson plans have been implemented in schools in several states in the United States and includes stimulating spatial thinking techniques, understandings of maps and map use, knowledge of the Korean Peninsula in the context of the East Asia Realm, and cultural diversity. [The National Atlas of Korea and the lesson plans are available at http://www.ngii.go.kr/en/main/main.do?rbsIdx=1.]
