The Strip-of-Grass Challenge
Roman, Harry T.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v76 n3 p34-35 Nov 2016
This brief article discusses various ways to use the grassy strip of land extending about three feet between the sidewalk and the street curb in many cities and neighborhoods. Next, it discusses the potential impact of different uses of this space on things like: people disembarking from their cars, clearance to existing fire hydrants, and town codes and regulations. The article suggests different class activities such as encouraging students to entertain some unusual ideas for locating things on this land area, having students survey the residents who live along streets to see what they would like done with the land, inviting town officials such as the town engineer, city planners, and street maintenance and engineering to discuss students' ideas, and possibly performing test cases of student team ideas placed in these grassy areas on school property or nearby to stimulate community discussions.
