Creating an Entrepreneurial Mindset
Guth, Douglas J.
Community College Journal, v87 n2 p26-31 Oct-Nov 2016
The road from teenage resourcefulness to a real-deal corporate operation was paved by the Bucks Business Association, a student led group at Bucks County Community College (BCCC) that hones student leadership, money management and organizational skills. Community colleges throughout the country are sharpening the startup-minded acumen of their charges while also reaching out to students still in high school, with the goal of fostering a culture of economic vitality through entrepreneurship. These pathways include business incubators, fab labs, experiential learning, programs and more, all designed to assist would-be founders in realizing their business-ownership dreams. Through direct dealings of running a company, making complex decisions, and communicating with investors, these emerging entrepreneurs are prepared to tackle the demands of postsecondary education along with those of the business world. Even as early as high school, young people have the capacity to tap into the entrepreneurial spirit and achieve the unexpected and, ultimately, open businesses, create jobs, reduce the unemployment rate and build economic prosperity. Students take ideas and conceptualize them onto paper, then they go beyond the idea stage into how to make their plan a reality.
