Exploring Klein Bottles through Pottery: A STEAM Investigation

While one author was reading "The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets by Simon Singh" (2013) in preparation for a presentation, the second author asked what in the book would be interesting to discuss. The topic of Klein bottles was on the first author's mind at that moment, so he tried to describe and explain the form to her--a real challenge, since they were driving and had no illustration to depict the form. She is a high school art teacher and art education instructor, and he teaches mathematics and math education at a local college, so while they started out using a shared vernacular, the conversation quickly became overly mathematics specific or perhaps not art specific enough. In either case, the discussion reached a serious impasse, and he knew that in order to explain Klein bottles more effectively, he would need to strengthen his understanding of them. In this article, the authors present how mathematics and art can share perspective and prominence in a collaborative learning experience.
