The Puppy Love problem asked fifth and sixth grade students to use their prior knowledge of measures of central tendency to determine a data set when given the mean, mode, median, and range of the set. The problem discussed in this article is a task with a higher level of cognitive demand because it requires that students (1) explore and understand the nature of mathematical concepts, processes, or relationships; (2) analyze the task and constraints, which may have limited possible solution strategies and solutions; and (3) use considerable cognitive effort, which may involve some level of anxiety for the student because of the unpredictable nature of the necessary solution process. This problem caused the students to think differently about the measures of central tendency and enriched their understanding of statistical measures.
