Forum: Learning Outcomes in Communication. Responses. Continuing the Conversation: Listening to the Oboe
Beebe, Steven A.
Communication Education, v65 n4 p498-501 2016
In this response, Steven Beebe comments that, as noted by several authors in this "Forum," the National Communication Association (NCA) Learning Outcomes in Communication (LOCs) are wisely proposed as "a starting point for conversation" rather than a prescriptive pronouncement of what all communication students should master. Beebe notes that the six papers presented in this forum offer thought-provoking questions and perspectives that encourage the iterative conversation to continue. He proposes individual faculty members, as well as departments and programs, should use the LOCs and the papers presented here, as question-provoking models for continuing the dialogue. Viewed from the perspective of disciplinary history, these LOCs are part of an ongoing discussion about what makes the communication discipline distinctive and coherent. Beebe closes by saying this: "If history tells us anything, it is this: What communication educators think is important will continue to evolve and change; and it is their job is to listen and continue to retune."
