The Sirens of Definition: Responding to the Call
Moon, Bruce L.
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v33 n3 p156-159 2016
The words art therapists use to describe their work and the definition(s) of art therapy they provide to the public are forms of communication that not only inform those outside the field of art therapy, but also shape practitioners' thoughts, practices, and professional identities. It is asked to what extent the definitions of art therapy reflect the work and what the implications are of reshaping definitions in response to contemporary social influences. Perhaps the field will be better served by anchoring definitions in artistic ways of knowing consistent with the eternal ways of being of artists who are committed to attending to the needs of people in search of the healing medicine of art.
