Examining the role of college mental health services in promoting student personal and academic success is essential to demonstrating their utility to university communities and administrations. Student learning outcomes following counseling and satisfaction with mental health services were assessed across 16 counseling centers in one university system. Following counseling, students reported overwhelming satisfaction with services, significant gains in intrapersonal skills, improved ability to focus on academics, and greater intention to stay in school. Older students and those living on campus reported more academic benefits as a result of counseling whereas women and those living off-campus reported greater change in overall well-being. Finally, students in their later years described better intrapersonal outcomes as a result of counseling than those in their early years of college. Findings suggest that student psychological well-being and academic functioning are intimately linked and have important implications for enhancing student outcomes. This project may serve as a model for other university systems who wish to share evaluation goals and join resources in assessment of student services.
