Predicting College Students' Positive Psychology Associated Traits with Executive Functioning Dimensions
Marshall, Seth
College Student Journal, v50 n2 p179-190 Sum 2016
More research is needed that investigates how positive psychology-associated traits are predicted by neurocognitive processes. Correspondingly, the purpose of this study was to ascertain how, and to what extent, four traits, namely, grit, optimism, positive affect, and life satisfaction were predicted by the executive functioning (EF) dimensions of behavior regulation (i.e., inhibition) and metacognition (i.e., working memory). College students (n = 269) completed a self-report EF measure, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000) and four self-report positive psychology surveys. Results indicated that global EF skills successfully predicted each of the four positive psychology variables. When analyzing each EF dimension individually, EF metacognitive skills better predicted each of the positive psychology variables when compared to EF behavior regulation. This suggests that metacognitive abilities such as holding information in working memory, planning sequences of behavior, and monitoring tasks are more connected to the positive psychology attributes when compared to behavior regulation skills such as inhibiting, regulating emotional control, and shifting attention. Findings from the current study extend previous EF and positive psychology research by utilizing an EF dimensional approach to understanding positive psychology related traits.
