Fay, Michael
Mathematics Teacher, v109 n9 p701-707 May 2016
Activities for Students appears five times each year in Mathematics Teacher, promoting student-centered activities that teachers can adapt for use in their own classroom. In the course of the activities presented here, students will "look for and make use of structure" by observing algebraic patterns in the power rule and "use appropriate tools strategically" to visualize the problem. They will also "try special cases and simpler forms of the original problem," which is an aspect of to "make sense of problems and persevere in solving them." However, the main thrust of this investigation is perseverance: Students persevere in working around a seemingly insurmountable division-by-zero problem. An activity sheet is also provided.
