The Practices of Geography
Bednarz, Sarah Witham
Geography Teacher, v13 n2 p46-51 2016
Sarah Bednarz begins by thanking Rebecca Theobald for the invitation to contrubute to this issue of "The Geography Teacher"("TGT"). As a member of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) Publications Committee and coeditor of the "Journal of Geography," Bednarz confesses that she was not favorably disposed to the creation of a new publication aimed at teachers when the idea was first proposed. What she liked about the "Journal of Geography" was that it blended scholarly articles with applied, classroom-ready instructional materials. Now after reviewing the articles in Theobald's first issue, Bednarz has changed her mind, and now believes that there is a need for a journal devoted to the practices of geography teaching in order to be able to transmit the practices of geography to young learners. In this article Bednarz first discusses the practices of geography, then examines opportunities for geography education, and "TGT." Finally, she reflects on ways geography education can move forward.
