Visual Rhetoric and Viewer Empathy in News Photographs
Rist, Mary F.
CEA Forum, v36 n2 Sum-Fall 2007
Over the last two or three decades a revolution has taken place in the area of communication which forces people to rethink the social and the semiotic landscape of Western developed societies. The effect of this revolution has been to dislodge written language from the centrality which it has held, or which has been ascribed to it, in public communication. Students get a great deal of information about the world visually. Students instinctively understand the power of visuals. In this article, the author shares her approach to engaging students in what journalists do by thinking more critically and using visuals.
