Using VITA Service Learning Experiences to Teach Hypothesis Testing and P-Value Analysis

This paper describes a hypothesis testing project designed to capture student interest and stimulate classroom interaction and communication. Using an online survey instrument, the authors collected student demographic information and data regarding university service learning experiences. Introductory statistics students performed a series of hypothesis tests on data from those respondents who had participated in a voluntary income tax assistance ("VITA") program as their exclusive service learning activity. Students then generated p-values using a predetermined a value to assess the impact of VITA service on variety of established service learning benefit categories. The class focused on the relative experience of males and females, and various sub-groupings.
