In this project, the researchers set out to develop a protocol to measure team behaviors in engineering education. The objective of this paper is the result of the attempt by the researchers to observe teams in the engineering classroom. The focus is the development of the protocol to measure team behavior and lessons learned from implementing this protocol in the engineering classroom. The researchers describe an eight-step process--"Protocol to Measure Team Behavior"--to plan and conduct studies that use direct observation along with an Effective Team Behavior Checklist. This project offers results that show the way to improvements and future work that should produce a useful and reliable tool for engineering education.
