Promoting and Assessing Mathematical Generalising
Hill, Tiffany; Lannin, John; van Garderen, Delinda
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v20 n4 p3-8 2015
Helping students generalise mathematical ideas is an essential component of teaching and learning of mathematics (Lannin, Ellis, Elliott & Zbiek, 2011). However, it can be challenging for primary teachers to assess and promote generalisation. Because generalisation is an essential part of mathematics instruction, the authors highlight the types of difficulties faced by young children when generalising and share the strategies they have used to assess and promote generalisation in young learners.
