Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, v25 n1 p37-52 Jan 2016
In recent years, the growth of China has successfully boosted the Chinese language to be studied by people from different language-speaking societies. The Chinese language has become the most preferred second or third language among non-Chinese native novices due to the great development of China and global economic change. The Chinese idiom is derived from the Chinese language and has served as an important component in Chinese vocabulary learning. A Chinese idiom usually consists of four Chinese characters with compendious meaning. It can be utilized to describe a situation without the using of complicated sentences. Learners who study Chinese may also engage in Chinese idiom learning as the latter is part and parcel of the language. However, the learning of Chinese idioms through the traditional "chalk-and-talk" method has failed to evoke the students' motivation to learn idioms. Moreover, the existing mechanisms for Chinese idiom learning are mostly designed and created for Chinese native learners. Certainly, this problem has caused difficulties for the non-Chinese native beginners in comprehending Chinese idioms. In order to assist those non-native learners in Chinese idiom learning, this study aims to develop a multimedia storytelling prototype for the learning of Chinese idioms by non-Chinese native novices.
