The Future Is…Now? These 4 Technologies Are Shaking up Higher Education, from the President's Office to the Classroom and Beyond
Violini, Bob
Community College Journal, v85 n1 p18-22 Aug-Sep 2014
As part of the student success agenda, the nation's community colleges have been asked to rethink their approach to education on every level. From the explosion of smartphones and mobile devices on campus to the demand for more robust data analytics and tracking to the increasingly technical nature of global work, technology has evolved from a complementary tack-on tool for educators to a fully integrated part of the student experience. This article highlights four innovations poised to have a profound impact on the nation's community college campuses. These include: (1) mobile apps in education (used effectively by Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee); (2) customer relationship management (CRM) technology (as demonstrated by El Paso Community College (EPCC) in Texas); (3) 3D printing technology (as exemplified by Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland); and (4) wearable technology, such as clothing and accessories that incorporate computer and advanced electronics (as demonstrated by Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) in Michigan).
