Patrilineal Ability: Nurturing Giftedness in Grandfathers, Fathers, and Sons
Smith, Fiona
Parenting for High Potential, v5 n1 p8-10 Fall 2015
The identification of his son's high ability can cause a father to confront his own experiences as a gifted child and adult and change his emotional life, family dynamics, and career. Over the past decade, Fiona Smith has worked closely with numerous multi-generations of grandfathers, fathers, and sons in Australia to analyze their backgrounds, thinking styles, and preferences for acknowledging and managing their giftedness. Herein she discusses common features in the profiles of gifted male adults she has interviewed, the benefits of self-reflection for fathers of gifted boys, advice to fathers of gifted sons from men she has interviewed, and how individual and joint counseling sessions can help. A list of resources is provided.
