Development of a Framework for Graph Choice and Construction
Angra, Aakanksha; Gardner, Stephanie M.
Advances in Physiology Education, v40 n1 p123-128 Mar 2016
Research on graph interpretation and basic construction is extensive, and student difficulties, primarily in K-12 type settings, have been well documented [e.g., graph choice, labels for axes, variables, and scaling axes]. It is important to provide students with repeated opportunities to increase competency and practice critical reflection in graphing choices. This article describes designed materials that are easy to implement in K-16 classrooms, increase students' graph knowledge, and provide a systematic framework for data presentation. Also, the article highlights the purpose, development, and usage of two materials: (1) a guide to data displays; and (2) a step-by-step guide to data communication. These materials are designed to facilitate the development of graphing competency and knowledge related to metarepresentational competence (MRC).
