Pretti-Frontczak, Kristie; Harjusola-Webb, Sanna; Chin, Margaret; Grisham-Brown, Jennifer; Acar, Serra; Heo, Kay; Corby, Maureen; Zeng, Songtian
Young Exceptional Children, v19 n1 p48-51 Mar 2016
An ever changing, ever diversifying, and ever-complex global society needs educational policies and practices that support and prepare all young children. In particular, policies and practices are needed that help children become well-rounded citizens. At the same time, there is no denying the many challenges and issues children, families, and educators face. A common challenge faced worldwide is policies and practices related to "school readiness." This article focuses on three readiness policies and practices, which the authors refer to as "mistakes." because such practices are in stark contrast with what is known regarding early development and effective instruction. The authors also offer three "readiness remedies" that emphasize the extraordinary, build upon the unique talents and gifts of children, and allow educators to make decisions regarding the delivery of effective and differentiated instruction.
