The United Nations at 70: The Journey so Far
Muftau, Rufai
Journal of Education and Practice, v7 n3 p154-168 2016
The relevance of the United Nations in maintaining peace and harmonious relationship amongst its members is not in doubt, this being the primary functions as contained in its Charter of 1945. Since that time till date, it has recorded some tremendous achievements in this direction, though not without some challenges. These challenges among others include: armed conflicts, race in the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons, and the Israel/Palestine conflicts, just to mention few. In this work, attempt is made to look at a brief history, structure and functions of the UN taking into account whether or not the lofty ideas and principles behind the establishment of the UN has been achieved. Observations are made. The way forward is suggested, then, followed by a conclusion of the work. [A list of references and bibliography is included.]
