The pressure on students, teachers, administrators and teacher preparation programs to demonstrate increased performance is at an all-time high. Teachers need to be willing to make deliberate changes to improve teaching effectiveness and increase student learning. The purpose of this article is to share practical steps that physical education teachers can take for implementing deliberate practice as a tool for professional development in their classrooms. Deliberate practice is specifically designed to increase teacher effectiveness. It requires repetition and constant feedback, and demands the teacher be highly focused on the process. Teachers of all experience levels can utilize the practical techniques provided in this article to increase their performance and enhance the teaching and learning environment.
