Is Anxiety in Young Boys the New Normal?

As a psychologist of 35 years, Wendy Mogel discusses what she has discovered to be the new trend behind anxiety in young boys. Through hours of probing and pondering, neither hyperparenting nor early trauma (what one might think were logical causes of a young boy's anxiety) is the key to understanding this new trend. She explains that many children tolerate parental overprotectiveness and over-involvement without becoming chronically anxious, and the majority of these young boys have what psychologists call an "unremarkable" family history. But they do have two seemingly unrelated characteristics in common. As heartbreaking, pathetic, or annoying as their parents find them to be at home, these boys' teachers think they are terrific. The other common characteristic: As responsible, capable, enthusiastic, and thoughtful as these boys are at school, they cannot be relied on at home. Mogel goes on to explore this issue deeper by gathering information from school nurses. Putting together the observations of the parents, teachers, and nurses, the boy-anxiety equation became clearer. Herein, she offers information on how anxiety builds in these young boys and how it can be alleviated by understanding the origin. She concludes that a boy-friendly curriculum is the key--the opportunity to do exciting and important physical and mental work and shoulder responsibilities beyond grades and scores--as anxiety-proofing and dignity-promoting agents.
