Where Discipline and Racial Equity Intersect
Colbert, Kimberly
American Educator, v39 n4 p26-28 Win 2015-2016
This article describes how "Courageous Conversations" workshops have assisted teachers charged with training colleagues in how to talk about racism with students and with each other, and how to do something about it. Such professional development around equity issues often includes personal reflection and discussion with colleagues about the role of institutional racism in public education, in the hopes of changing the system. The process also includes working with students who desire to be seen, to exist, as this is at the heart of restorative practices.
