"Listening Is an Act of Love": Learning Listening through StoryCorps
Simmons, Nathaniel; Tenzek, Kelly E.
Communication Teacher, v30 n1 p17-21 2016
The importance of listening continues to be reinforced within professional, personal, and popular cultural contexts. Despite the attention employers, teachers, scholars, and various popular outlets attend to listening, engaging students in activities that practice such skills remain challenging. Understanding that interpersonal competence requires motivation, knowledge, and skills this activity focuses upon building the latter. By increasing students' skill and knowledge of how to listen competently, it is anticipated students will become motivated to do so within their various relationship types. To achieve this goal, the article describes the use of the StoryCorps' documentary "Listening is an Act of Love" (see http://storycorps.org/animation/listening-is-an-act-of-love/). This activity is best presented in the class period, where the students will have a foundation of knowledge about the importance of listening and an example of listening. The next step includes homework. Throughout this activity, students gain first-hand experience in practicing listening. Doing so, with reflection, provides students a safe atmosphere in which to evaluate their own listening skills and those of others. Students take away stronger listening skills.
