Evaluating the Performance of Online K-12 Schools

This article examines K-12 online student and school performance across an entire state (Colorado) in the United States through two comparisons. First, state assessment scores of students in online schools are compared to those in traditional brick and mortar schools. Second, the accountability scores of online schools are compared to those of brick and mortar schools. For both comparisons, two samples are used--(a) online students or schools to all non-online students or schools in the state and (b) online students or schools to a matched sample of non-online students or schools. Results indicate the scores of students in online schools and the accountability scores of those schools lag behind those of brick and mortar schools. When using all students or schools as the comparison, the difference between online and non-online is almost always statistically significant. However, when using a matched sample, only some of the differences are significant.
