Articulating the Distinctiveness of the Honors Learning Experience
Salas, Angela M.
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council, v13 n1 p29-31 Spr-Sum 2012
As Director of the Honors Program at Indiana University Southeast, Angela Salas has been immersed in what Richard Badenhausen describes in his essay, "Costs and Benefits in the Economy of Honors," as the financial issues of which honors faculty and administrators may not, as a group, be sufficiently aware. Yet, despite wrestling on a regular basis with student financial difficulties, finite honors program scholarship resources, and long-term planning, Angela Salas finds, thanks to Badenhausen, that she has been neglecting the issue of the distinctiveness of the honors learning experience. This essay discusses how reflecting upon the distinctiveness of the honors learning experience led to the revamping of Indiana University Southeast Honors Program's website. Preparation for the website update involved surveying Honors Council members and honors program alumni, which led to the realization that the honors learning experience has more to do with student dispositions and their connectedness to the institution and each other than with specific class assignments. Students remember human moments, events, achievements, and interactions within the honors program itself. [For "Costs and Benefits in the Economy of Honors," see EJ1082243.]
