Celebrating 40 Years of Transformative Learning
Kokkos, Alexis; Kasl, Elizabeth; Markos, Laura; Marsick, Victoria J.; Sheared, Vanessa; Taylor, Edward W.; Yorks, Lyle
Journal of Transformative Education, v13 n4 p290-315 Oct 2015
This article contains six essays on transformative learning (TL) that were written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of TL. These authors belong to a ''wave'' of scholars who joined the field of TL between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s. Their stories describe the chronicle behind their engagement with the TL theory and its community. This is evident in the essays written by five of them, since they primarily focus on their experiences regarding the first stages of their involvement. Adding another perspective, Laura Markos describes the foundational orientation of the Journal of Transformative Education, reflecting the viewpoints of leaders of various educational institutions engaged in transformative education whose input was central to the journal's founding. Following an introduction by Alexis Kokkos, the following essays are included: (1) Reflections on My Relationship to TL (Elizabeth Kasl); (2) Perspective Transformation in Local and Global Perspective (Laura Markos); (3) My TL Journey (Victoria J. Marsick); (4) Evolution of My Perspectives on TL (Vanessa Sheared); (5) Reflections on TL Theory (Edward W. Taylor); and (6) A 24-Year Journey With TL (Lyle Yorks). Reflections on the Authors' Essays: TL as a Movement and a Mode of Making Meaning (Alexis Kokkos) is included at the end of the article. (Individual essays contain references.)
