At Issue: Gaining Mileage from a MOOC
Brandemuehl, Kristin
Community College Enterprise, v20 n2 p56-59 Fall 2014
Dean of Math, Science, and Health at Washtenaw Community College, Kristin Brandemuehl describes what it was like taking her first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). As a teacher, Brandemuehl was intrigued with what a MOOC was and what quality of an educational modality it might be. She also figured that participating in this MOOC would not only give her some perspective, but might also give her some good ideas for her own online and mixed-mode courses. This MOOC was a six-week course that incorporated video lectures, discussion board threads, readings, optional writing assignments with peer reviews (necessary for receiving a certificate with distinction) and quizzes. The course was "History and Future of (Mostly) Higher Education" offered through Duke University. Herein, she shares lessons learned from her experience.
