"The Peer Groups"--The Formation and Facilitation of Action Learning Sets within the HE Community of an FE College
Joesbury, Mark
Action Learning: Research and Practice, v12 n2 p224-234 2015
The mission of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is to safeguard the public interest in sound standards of higher education qualifications and to inform and encourage continual improvement in the management of the quality of higher education. As part of this mission, QAA undertakes reviews of higher education provision delivered in further education colleges. This process (was) known as integrated quality and enhancement review (IQER) (QAA 2010). This Account of Practice describes the use of Action Learning Sets (ALSs) for enhancing staff development initiated in response to a QAA review of higher education programmes delivered by a further education College. The article begins with an explanation of the Background Context of this development. This is followed by the "Peer Groups" Formation, Evaluative Commentary from participants, and Discussion and Case study of "The Last Peer Group" that continued meeting for two years following this QAA review process. Final Reflections relate aspects of the findings to Donovan's (2014) conceptual frame for "Power, conflict and undiscussables"; and a short biography conclude the Account.
