An exploration of the educational experiences of foster children reveals serious problems of adjustment to the school environment. This study discloses patterns of defensive reactions and indicates ways in which insensitive handling by school personnel aggravates adjustment problems. Includes guidelines to reduce transition trauma and enhance the learning experience. (SDH)
