British Journal of Guidance & Counselling, v43 n5 p530-545 2015
The study investigated the Violent Disciplinary Practices (VDP) perpetrated by parents and by teachers against secondary schools students. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Six hundred and sixteen participants comprising 336 and 280 parents and teachers, respectively, were selected to participate in the study. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study. Data were analysed using percentages and t test. The results indicated that most of the teachers (55.4%) demonstrated good knowledge of VDP, while only 9.3% of the parents showed similar level of knowledge, and there was a significant difference between the parents' and teachers' knowledge of what constitutes VDP (t = 24.174, p < 0.05). Based on these findings, recommendations were made accordingly.
