Reflections and Challenges for the Public Administration Community
Bouckaert, Geert
Teaching Public Administration, v31 n2 p226-229 Sep 2013
The question of whether the field of public administration education is prepared for the future of the public sector in Europe is a complex one, which needs to be unpacked to give a grounded answer. Unpacking this question means that there needs to be discussions on not just what educating the field of public administration means, but also discussions on what is needed to have some idea of what the future of public administration will look like, with a range of uncertainties, and then how these two topics interact. To cover this, at least three issues need to be discussed: what is the mental frame to take? How to determine the content of teaching and training? How to institutionalize this, to make sure changes and improvements are accumulating and irreversible? The author discusses these three issues in this commentary.
