Sitting Ballet: A Pilot Program Designed to Include Children with Physical Disabilities in the Private Studio Environment
Matzner, J.
Journal of Dance Education, v15 n3 p116-121 2015
While recovering from a serious illness, the author looked for dance classes that would help in regaining flexibility, balance, and core strength. Finding no local dance classes that could accommodate the deconditioning experienced from almost two years of physical inactivity and disuse due to bedrest, the author wondered if there were other adults and children in the community who had physical mobility concerns, could ambulate independently, and wanted to dance, but were unable to find appropriate classes. Thus, begun in January 2014, was the piloted two beginning-level Sitting Ballet classes to address this need: one adult and one children's class. Each class met once a week for either four or eight weeks. This article focuses on a children's pilot sitting dance class, and describes the inspiration, guiding philosophy, class design, goals, benefits, challenges, and recommendations associated with the pilot program.
