Teaching for Skill Mastery
Chepko, Stevie; Doan, Robert
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v86 n7 p9-13 2015
This article focuses on establishing a mastery climate where all students find success and start on the road to physical literacy. Using a five-step approach, physical educators will be offered guidance for developing practice tasks that lead to skill mastery. These steps include creating a mastery environment, designing deliberate practice tasks, maximizing the number of touches, integrating tactics and strategies, and providing specific corrective feedback and assessment. The focus will be on the integration of tactics and strategies in practice tasks that allow students to problem solve, think critically about game strategy, and apply skills in game-like environments without sacrificing skill practice.
