Strategizing Control of the Academy
Roy, Sara
Thought & Action, p147-162 Fall 2005
Attacks on academic freedom are very prevelant on college campuses nationwide. Attacks are directed at academic freedom generally but the most specific and virulent is reserved for those educators--both Jewish and non-Jewish--in area studies, and notably, Middle Eastern studies whose ideas are considered anti-Israel, anti-Semitic or anti-American. This article provides examples of attacks in colleges around the country and discusses the establishment of Campus Watch. Campus Watch is a Web site with the primary purpose of identifying and monitoring Middle Eastern studies faculty in departments across the United States for signs of anti-American and anti-Israel bias.
