School on Probation: Teaching That Changes Lives
Stoehr, Taylor
Thought & Action, p31-40 Fall 2006
For the past dozen years the author has been teaching, along with other volunteers, in a program called "Changing Lives Through Literature," serving the Dorchester District Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Changing Lives began as a single experiment in New Bedford in 1991 and has spread entirely by word of mouth to a dozen other jurisdictions in Massachusetts and courts in six other states. The students are probationers of the court and they receive six months off their sentences after completing the 10-week course. The actual approach and curriculum vary from place to place, according to staff and student body. In this article, the author discusses the program and how lives are changed.
