How does an instructor capture students' attention in a guest lecture or one-shot class? In this article, the author presents some strategies to attract and maintain students' interest in a 60-90 minute session, which explore methods for understanding students' needs, obtaining buy-in, showing enthusiasm, and incorporating in-class activities. A 90-minute lecture handout is included.
