Broader, Deeper, Farther: Lessons from the First Year of Headship
Kislowicz, Barry
Independent School, v74 n3 Spr 2015
Rabbi Barry Kislowicz is the head of school at Fuchs Mizrachi School (Ohio). Here he takes time to reflect on the course of his professional life as it has evolved from camp counselor, to classroom teacher, to division director, to division principal. He writes in this article that when he had the opportunity to make his most recent transition to head of school, he thought it would be just one more step along the continuum. He says that he expected a challenge, but did not understand the depth to which headship is qualitatively different from any other school role he has experienced. He has come to identify three essential areas in which the role of the head is fundamentally distinct from all others. Kislowicz says that while there is no substitute for experience, understanding what makes headship unique is the key to success for those stepping into the role for the first time. Educators tend to feel that they are spread too thin, yet to be effective, a new head of school must become broader, deeper, and farther reaching than any previous role has required.
