Innovative Teaching Methods for the 21st Century Students
Deepak
Journal on School Educational Technology, v1 n1 p15-19 Jun-Aug 2005
Futurum in Sweden is described here as a school that does not have any classrooms, there is nothing like a timetable, no school bells can be heard, the students do not have any school bags, and teachers are without desks. Futurum is a radically new school that merges creative architecture with modern learning and teaching methods. This article describes student life at Futurum as a cooperative learning environment in which small teams made up of students of different levels of ability use different learning activities to develop their understanding of a particular subject. Pedagogical principles have been greatly improved, and subjects are not taught as facts. There is no learning by route. Subjects are integrated into a context and students approach them from a problem-oriented perspective. Chemistry and Maths are often interconnected using an overall theme. The combination of project work, group work, supported by a well equipped and caring environment, appears to create ideal preconditions for the declared pedagogical objectives of Futurum.
