Understanding the Impact of Arterial Stenosis on Blood Flow through a Tissue

This article arises from the author's experience helping medical students apply core biophysical principles toward understanding cardiovascular physiology. The purpose of the article is illustrate how the effect of an arterial stenosis on blood flow to tissue supplied exclusively by the stenosed artery should be assessed. This discussion was triggered with an open-ended problem that typically elicits an incorrect response from beginners in cardiovascular physiology. This incorrect response stems from misapplication of Poiseuille's equation to the main problem ("problem 1") discussed in this article. Subsequently, the author's focus in this article is to share with readers how the author approaches helping students understand why the application of Poiseuille's equation in the context of "problem 1," in the manner beginners typically tend to apply, is mistaken and how this can be corrected. The instructional strategy implicit is one of inducing cognitive conflict until the conflict resolves in the learner's mind.
